This article isn’t written to bang the drum about the importance of having a blog on your site, I think that’s clear enough with all the press flying around about the need to embrace social media and manage your reputation online. This article is therefore for all those who have adopted the notion of having a blog and want to know what to do next!
We are regularly going into meetings these days and hearing that the company in question has embraced social media and implemented a blog… but struggle to know what to write about and finding the time to write it – completely understandable to be fair, it can be a complete minefield and things are changing on a daily basis. This is really where a blog content strategy is key.
So what is a content strategy?
Put simply, it’s your ‘blog post writing bible’ and brings you focus as to why you are actually blogging in the first place. Physically, it normally runs into 10 pages (dependent upon the complexity of your posts and blog) and should feature, at the very least, all of the following key items (in no particular order):
• Where is the inspiration coming from (which resources are you tapping into)
• What are the categories to feature on your blog
• The type of content to feature (i.e. interviews, video, industry news, polls etc)
• Identifying your blog neighbourhood
• How often you are going to post
• Who is responsible for posting and quality assurance
• Your top keywords to feature within the blog
• Linking policy (are you linking and achieving links back)
• Comments policy (what are people allowed to say and control over rude remarks)
• Milestone guide (what do you want to achieve in 6 months and on?)
All of the above are incredibly important to feature in your Blog Content Strategy, ‘if you fail to plan – you plan to fail’ when it comes to blogging. However, if you get your strategy right you will find your blog your most valuable online marketing resource – so give it some time and love and you shall be rewarded!
