I have to get something off my chest, something that happened to me recently… something that made me question how a certain offline brand can possibly compete with the online. Yes, this is slightly off topic in relation to social media of course but still concerns forward thinking marketing prowess.

The Scenario

Picture this, your son is turning 7 and is football crazy. He’s requested an England football kit (goodness knows why) with his name and favourite number printed on it. Not a problem, anything to see the smile on his little face. I do a fair amount of research online and find 3 companies who would do it, but they all look a little dodgy to be completely honest and I’m not convinced I want to spend my hard earned dough with them.

So I decide on a trip to Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, a fantastic spot for a bit of shopping and not a million miles away. I find a Sports Direct store there and my luck’s in – they do the kit I’m after and do all the printing too – I can also see a sample to check the quality, which is fantastic. It’s also £5 cheaper than on line too – turn up for the books!

The only downside is that I have to wait 2 hours for the printing to dry – acceptable and no moans here. But, I’m called back to the office and decide to call the shop and get it delivered – simple right?
Wrong! Later that afternoon I make the call and get a rather fed up sounding shop assistant who tells me she is too busy to talk to me. Fair enough… I’ll call back in 30 mins and here’s how the conversation went.
Ring Ring, Ring Ring

“ello, Sports Direct?”

“Hi, I purchased and paid for a football kit earlier but unfortunately had to leave Portsmouth so was wondering whether you’d be kind enough to put it in the post for me please?”

“Nah, we don’t do that service”

“Why is that then?”

“Company policy”

“OK… so where does that leave me?”

“You’ll have to come back and collect”

“Even if I pay you an extra £5 for postage”

“Yep”.

“Hmmm… I don’t get it, but seeing as I’m British I’ll just keep my mouth shut and not moan any more, I’ll collect in a week”.

A week passes and I make a special journey back down to Portsmouth which is a 2 hour round trip and about £20 worth of fuel.

I get to the shop, same lady is looking even more flustered this time and grunts at me. She snatches the receipt and shuffles off into some room out the back. She appears 5 minutes later with a bag with the kit in.

Yay – mission successful. She passes me the bag without even a glance let alone a smile and immediately grunts at another customer.

The real sting in this tale is what is written on the bag – “24 hour delivery”

Now you don’t need to be a marketing guru to see the issue here. So many retailers have moaned to me about online competition killing them – it’s time to take a long hard look at your best asset, CUSTOMER SERVICE and going that extra mile, for if you don’t then you won’t survive.

Invest in training your staff and an infrastructure that can go way and beyond the call of duty for your customer. Make shopping a pleasure again!

Rant over!!!

We recently organised a Lady Gaga themed ‘flash mob dance off’ for The Bentall Centre in Kingston a few weeks back, but we’re not entirely sure whether the correct terminology for it is a ‘flash dance mob’ or ‘flash mob dance’... either way it was tonnes of fun and seemed to entertain the crowds.

The dance itself was well planned and choreographed by some friends at Vital Signz Dance, a very cool local dance troop – keep your eyes out for these guys as they are going places!

As we’ve been hinting for the past couple of weeks, we’ve recently started working with some rather groovy new clients, one of which is The Bentall Centre (Kingston Upon Thames), arguably one of the UK’s most forward thinking, aesthetically impressive shopping centres.

We’ve hit the ground running and launched into the online promotion of BFest, an innovative event that sees some of the UK’s most promising pop acts perform in the centre over 2 days. It’s a free event (so make sure you don’t miss out) and happens on the 7th & 8th August 2010.

We’re planning a few surprises that are set to ensure this event generates global online coverage and the Bentall brand recognised as a leading voice in shopping centre social media marketing.

We’re also managing their blog and producing engaging content on a regular basis, directly connecting with the local community and strengthening ties with local businesses wherever possible. Growing Facebook ‘likes’ and Twitter ‘followers’ is the key objective.

Finally, we’ll be promoting events throughout the year to our broad online connections in fashion, style and mummy/baby categories.

How can you get involved?

Join The Bentall Centre Facebook page

JKR have been doing what they know best for over 20 years now and have witnessed such design revolutions as the end of typesetting and the evolution of the Mac.
During the past 6 months we’ve spotted some very interesting social media related trends appearing that are set to directly affect the journalism and PR industries. Over the next 2 years these trends will grow in importance and restructure the marcomms industry as we know it and more so than it already has!

Public relations agencies employing/merging with SEO agencies and social media agencies

As the social media revolution evolves and PR agencies get to grips with the effect they can have on search rankings through effective online PR, we’ve been noticing a few of the UKs leading agencies make approaches to buy into SEO and emerging social media practices and/or employ SEO experts for their copy/keyword research, blogger outreach and conversation listening skills. PRs are increasingly recognising the importance of SEO in their offering and are looking to compete more effectively / add a differentiator that will help them win more business whilst create a sustainable future for themselves. We as a social media agency have had 2 such approaches in just 4 months!

It’s been a busy couple of months here at Orbital Media with lots of new clients coming on board (more about that in a couple of weeks), the impending launch of our new site (due early August 2010), the acquisition of a movie production house, 4 new members to the team and the recent opening of our Surrey office. Now with offices in Suffolk and Surrey we’re able to cater for far more businesses in London, the South West & South East.

BUT one thing hasn’t changed - our focus and passion for social media marketing and desire to be the best in the industry.

We’re currently involved in a broad variety of social media projects with some pretty major brands as well as developing some ground breaking social media initiatives with global publishers.

So, if you have a project you’d like to discuss please call us to arrange a meeting.

We recently picked up on a fascinating research article (from ComScore) that addresses who are the biggest spenders in terms of social communities and how much they typically spend.

Interestingly it highlights the fact that more people are spending longer periods online and that is having a direct, positive effect on eCommerce… maybe because they are using social media to influence their buying decisions, or perhaps it’s just because they spend SO much time on social networks that they simply don’t have time to get to the shops!

Whatever the reason, it’s a very strong message to brands emphasising the importance of social media.

The article predicts that by the end of 2010, 9 out of 10 businesses will be engaging through social media and the likes of Facebook and Twitter – this is going to lead to a few interesting breakthroughs in learning how to monetise your presence across these networks.

You may have recently seen (or heard about) a school here in sleepy Surrey that recently acted out and sang their own cover of Pixie Lott’s ‘Boys & Girls’. What has gone from a tiny acorn of an idea for raising money for a worthwhile charity has become an internet sensation and ultimately the best PR marketing exercise in British schooling history. What a great advert for a great, forward thinking school!

If you are one of the many companies out there slowly but surely launching into the world of social media then no doubt you would have come across Wordpress, one of the leading blogging engines around.

Q - What is a blogging engine?

A - It’s a platform that you can blog from. You can brand your blog, plug in multiple apps, engage your customers, drive thousands more visitors to your site… and compete more effectively within your sector.

Out for the many blogging engines available today Wordpress is by far the most efficient, easy to use and search engine friendly – we know this from experience of working with a number of platforms.

recently read a fascinating article about how The New York Observer is incentivising its journos with bonuses for well read articles and the amount of Twitter followers (see it here) and felt compelled to write something on the matter.

Personally… it’s a fantastic idea, especially with all the tracking tools available today… why haven’t others thought about this?

Obviously a paper or magazine survives through its readership. The more readers the more sales and ad revenues – it’s a simple model… so incentivising its core knowledge sharers in this way makes absolute sense. Bonuses will help journos think outside of the box to get more followers (for the publication), embrace the trends around social media and online publishing fully and ultimately make for a more exciting reader experience. The only problem is (and has always been) – how do publishers make their money online in the future. Obviously The Times (UK) is launching their ‘paid for’ online subscription but from a personal perspective I really don’t hold out much hope for this model when you can get the same information elsewhere for free.

Ad revenues online will almost certainly increase along with the introduction of affiliate marketing techniques (which we are starting to see emerge), but I’m hearing that many publishers are petrified and rightly so. Perhaps the way forward therefore is to diversify away from publishing or perhaps develop a more exciting, value adding means of sharing their content… but that’s the million dollar question right!

Here’s how The New York Observer are measuring journos bonuses on:

•	Pageviews
•	Number of posts
•	New Twitter followers
•	Number of comments
•	External pickups

The scheme is being trialed for three months with the first place receiving $500. The second place will receive $300. There is a $2500 cap per employee in total awards. This means that one employee can sweep each month; but also there is a caveat that the same employee cannot win in consecutive months. Finally, web only employees are not included!

I’ve got a feeling that Ney York’s SEO trainers are going to be having a bumper year if this takes off.

The world’s gone social media crazy tweeting this, facebooking that and blogging whatever and whenever we can! But look a little deeper in to this albeit fickle (on the outside) communication revolution and you’ll find an incredibly exciting marketing opportunity for hoteliers.

Whilst some of us may already have a twitter account or perhaps even a Facebook page, the fact remains that these marketing mediums are relatively untouched in the industry simply because we either don’t have a dickie what to do with it all, or possibly because there simply isn’t enough time in the day to run a hotel and put time into something with no any proven rewards.

Well, the good news is that after reading this article you’ll hopefully have a better understanding of what social media is all about, and more to the point, how a hotelier should be making the most of it in order to fill more beds.

The importance of blogs within the Travel Industry is set to increase over the next few years. Changes in the way content is aggregated across search engines and social media will push companies towards placing blogs and social networking at the forefront of their online marketing strategies.

Whether you have a blog already or you’re thinking about integrating one, this article aims to give you crucial insights into using corporate blogging as an incredibly powerful marketing tool.

Here are our 7 essential tips to corporate blogging:

Step 1 - Choose your blog platform
There’s a wide variety of choice out there when it comes to blogging platforms. We recommend Wordpress, which offers many thousands of easy to use plugins for bespoke functionality. The blog should ideally be integrated into your website as a Sub Domain (e.g. http://www.mytravelagency.com/blog). Other blogging platforms to consider might be Drupal, Typepad or Expression Engine.

Step 2 - The Content Strategy
Many blogs fail because they have been insufficiently planned. A content strategy should essentially lists out; who is going to write editorial, how the blog will be promoted, principal topics, content ideas, regularity of content posting, which other blogs to align with, what keywords are to be targeted. Read on and this will make more sense!
